March 18: High Hopes and Disappointments

This was weirdly a day where I kept on being excited to eat something and then not really liking it that much. That doesn't really happen to me that often. I guess lucky that it was just this once.

Breakfast: Oatmeal

I wanted oatmeal since the night before, but I didn't realize we were out of steel cut oats until the morning. I decided to just use rolled oats, even though I don't like them as much. But rolled oats are easy in the microwave, so I did that. Cooked in water, added maple syrup, cinnamon, crumbled walnuts on top. It was like it had no flavor. I wonder if because I didn't add salt...

And not the texture I like- I like chewier (that's why steel cut is good). Oh well, you live and you learn. We use the rolled oats mainly for baking stuff anyway, and I will buy more steel cut for when these cravings hit.

**ok I am realizing maybe you're thinking "Rose, you have COVID" but when I say it had no flavor, I could taste the cinnamon, it was like the oatmeal itself had no flavor. I did freak myself out there for a sec, though.

Also, made this mess. Still easier to clean than a pot, though.

Lunch: Pierogis and Broccolini

Ok lunch was actually the reverse of the theme of this blog. I didn't feel like eating anything I could think of, but I was getting hungry so I did boiled pierogis and steamed the broccolini in a little basket on top, and it turned out very satisfying. A good, fast lunch. Boiled is not my favorite pierogi-cooking method, but it was easy to set up before my meeting started. In the glass is iced tea. I make a pot of tea every morning and have started putting any leftovers that aren't enough for a whole mug into a big mason jar in the fridge. Then, that becomes my iced tea. Pretty genius, I think. This was mainly cardamom tea, but there were probably also some batches of kalami assam in there. Tastes good.

Snack: Nachos

I got the snackies around 3:30 so made these while I waited for a phone call I had scheduled. Broke up scoops, tore up slices of cheddar and pepper jack. Microwave, not oven. A perfect snack.

Dinner: Burgers and Dogs

I was really in the mood for a burger and Janty had bought some beyond burger patties recently so we had that. He has really been into buying beyond meat lately. I like the sausages, but I think for burgers, when I am craving it, this is not for me. But could be because I put weird toppings. Not weird, but not my usual. This horseradish mustard sauce and pickled jalapenos. Maybe if I had just done mustard I would've liked it better. Or if we had onions and tomatoes, but we didn't have those. The hot dog was good. Had mustard on that. The chips were also very disappointing. It was perfect 72 light breeze weather, the kind that makes you want to play a sport. We walked to the park and played badminton after work and stopped at Walgreens on the way home for buns and I got some Utz salt and pepper chips because I thought those would taste so good for the weather, but they were not good!! I only bought a small bag, but I only ate one handful. Maybe I'll try the leftovers today and see if they're better. For me, the texture was the problem. I have never experienced such a bad chip.

Dessert: Tollhouse Ice Cream Sandwich

When I was little, my dad and I would go to the shoppette and split one of these. I always thought they were sooooo huge. I remember the first time I ate a whole one by myself. I felt like I must be a thousand years old to be able to eat a whole ice cream sandwich myself. Idk if they changed their recipe or what, but man this was sweet!! Even for me, a big sweet fan. I did not finish. Had to save the rest for another time. I am young again.
