Feb. 12-18, 2023 - Sweden

Went on a surprise trip to Sweden bc Janty had to go for work so I tagged along for the free hotels. I gotta say, I was not blown away by the food...I think if I go back I will do more research ahead of time of what I should be eating because it felt like everything just didn't have a lot of flavor...I bet it's better in the summertime when you can eat a little fish outside with a fun little drink. Here's the foods. They're out of order from when I ate them.

Meatballs

I had to work pretty much the whole day when we were in Halmstad so I stayed at their very nice library. They had a cafe on the first floor and I got this meatball beet salad bread tower.

Train snacks

We took a 5-hour train from Halmstad to Stockholm so I went to a grocery store to get snacks. Was surprisingly not drawn to any of them but I got these. I did not like the salty licorice but I did like the pollys and the chips were fine, pretty regular.

Train Dinner

Janty got us first-class tickets on the train and it came with dinner! This was a shrimp salad thing, which the shrimps were pretty good, but there was a HUGE amount of mayo underneath them. I kind of just didn't mix it in because I don't love mayo. Also I can't find my pic, but I didn't know we would get dinner on the train so I stopped at a little stand near the train station and ordered what I thought was going to be a hot dog and turned out to be a hot dog, yes, but covered in mashed potatoes and mayoey relish. It looked very gross. Tastewise the potatoes were good but I wasn't crazy about the relish. The guy who sold me it was very nice, though.

Kardemummebullar

Cardamom bun. I liked the crunchy top of this. The bread part just didn't have a lot of flavor! Idk! I really started to question whether I had Covid when I was reflecting on the food when I got home, but I have been making myself stuff here and it is all flavorful and delicious!

Gravlax smorrebrod

I mostly just walked around by myself while Janty was working and this was a fun little lunch I got. There's bread under there.

Hotel Breakfast

Janty didn't put me on the hotel reservation so I was too scared for us to both go to hotel breakfast but lucky for me Janty doesn't eat breakfast and also kept waking up right before he had to leave for work so I got to use the breakfast spot! I loooove European hotel breakfast. This looks like whatever who cares, but trust me it was so good. I would like jail visits 20x more if the hotels I stay at for those had breakfast like this on real plates. I only ended up getting hotel breakfast two days because the other days I went to breakfast with Janty but ugh I wish I had just done both.

Hot dog

Maybe you're wondering why I ate so many hot dogs. Well, there were stands all over the place ok!! And my schedule was kind of off the whole time, so it was a handy thing to grab in the afternoons.

McDonalds

One of the days we both fell asleep after work so we woke up at a weird time and decided to see what fun Sweden specials they had at McDonald's. Surprisingly, lots of jalapeno stuff? We got these jalapeno poppers. I didn't like them but that's not Sweden's fault I just don't like this kind of fake cheese.

Another Sweden special was a back garlic chicken sandwich. This did have flavor but really fell apart while I was eating it.

Duck and Lentils

The one day Janty had off from work to explore it rained and was really cold so we found a cozy-looking restaurant and stayed there for a long time. I got duck confit with lentils and potatos au gratin. Pretty good.

Creme Brulee

We also got creme brulee. I used to not like this but I liked this one. I guess I've changed.

Semla

They had these all over the place. It is a bun with cream and almond paste in the middle. Pretty good. I liked the almond part.

Hotel Breakfast

I don't have a picture of probably the thing I liked the most on my whole trip which was this breakfast sandwich I made at hotel breakfast. It was just butterkase, ham (?), butter on a roll but man! It was so good.

Ok I think I am missing some meals but oh well! To be clear, none of the foods were bad, I just wasn't like "wow this is so good" except about the sandwich.

Oh one of the meals was dinner we had with Janty's coworker. I got fish. It was good.
